In the UK, children are being encouraged to start learning to read much earlier than many countries, with no additional benefits, according to Dr. Lilian Katz, a professor who studies reading models around the world. 

In Scandinavian countries, children generally begin learning to read around the age of 7, and their reading results are not much different than those children who began at age 4 in the UK. 

So why pressure children to read at age 4 when they could be participating in more play-based learning?
